Yoga for Back Pain

Many people are turning to yoga these days instead of traditional exercise routines for relief of upper and lower back pain. In the book, Backache Relief, the authors surveyed patient's with back problems to find out what treatments the patients themselves found the most effective to relieve their backaches. According to their survey results, an "extraordinarily high" percent of the back sufferers who practice yoga reported good results in the long run. Fifty-one percent of the participants who tried yoga reported that they received "dramatic long term" relief from pain. Yoga was also reported to be helpful for people with scoliosis, neck pain and osteoarthritis.

Some of the poses I personally found especially helpful for back pain from the yoga book Back Care Basics : A Doctor's Gentle Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief ) were:

  • Crocodile Twist
  • Passive Back Arch
  • One Leg Up, One Leg Out
  • Supported Supine Resting Pose
  • Forward Triangle Pose
  • Seated Twist
  • Chair Seated Forward Bend
