TMJ Exercises and Treatment Tips

  • I switched my mouse hand to the the hand on my side opposite my TMJ pain. This helped quite a bit. I also got a mouse with an optical scanner as it glided smoother than my previous mouse. There are a number of optical scanner mice available. I bought the Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical and was very happy with it. I'd tried other mice, a trackball and a glide pad, but for me the optical scanner mouse worked the best by far. It reduced much of the tension in my hand compared to the old trackball type mouse I had been using. I also cut back on my computer use while for awhile, especially when my jaw was in pain.

  • I also bought the book, Pain Free. Many of the exercises in this book are based on yoga poses. I could not do all of the exercises at first because some of them put too much pressure on my hands, which had overly tight muscles to begin with. However many of the exercises in the book did help, especially the foot circles, crocodile twist, frog, gravity drop and spinal twist. By releasing tension and lengthening the muscles in my legs and my sides, over time this released the muscle tension on my upper body, including my jaw. One person who bought this book after reading my web site emailed me to let me know she cured her chronic TMJ pain after only a week of doing the exercises in this book.

  • I used a fanny pack instead of a purse with a shoulder strap whenever my jaw was in pain. This took pressure off my shoulders and prevented any downward tension from pulling on my jaw and causing further TMJ symptoms. Some of my problems had started initially from wearing an overloaded shoulder strap purse on my right shoulder, which pulled down on my right jaw muscles.

  • The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook is a very helpful book for times when my muscles were too sore to do yoga or any other kind of exercise. My two sons and I all have problems with fibromyalgia and muscle tension, but the using the trigger point techniques in this book help us to lead fairly normal lives. Trigger point therapy works especially well for times when we are in acute pain. The yoga and stretching exercises from the previous TMJ page work well for improving muscle alignment over the long term, but for periods of acute pain the trigger point therapy has the most immediate impact. When my TMJ was at its worst, there were times when my jaw was so sore I had to eat soups and baby food all day. At times it even hurt to turn my head. As such, I could not do yoga during these times. Trigger point therapy, plus warm showers worked well during these times.

Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief by Clair Davies - Trigger point therapy is a proven technique used for the relief of soft-tissue pain and dysfunction, including pain from repetitive strain injuries, accident trauma, and sports injuries, as well as fibromyalgia (pain in muscles, ligaments, and tendons) and related conditions.
