1. Make sure you are getting enough magnesium in your diet. Studies show that most people do not consume the minimum recommended amounts of this important mineral. Magnesium is used for hundreds of functions within the body, so a deficiency may cause hundreds of different adverse health symptoms. Symptoms associated with Mg deficiency include diabetes, migaine headaches, mitral valve prolapse syndrome, fibromyalgia, TMJ and many more. While the U.S. has an abundance of advertising information about the benefits of calcium, what many people do not know is that calcium is a magnesium antagonist. If you consume too much calcium, it may lower your magnesium levels. Good sources of magnesium include leafy green vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds.

2. Give yoga a try. Yoga has been around for thousands of years, and is currently very popular in the U.S. Studies have shown that it can help with many different adverse health conditions from carpal tunnel syndrome to diabetes. Our bodies were designed to move around, stretch and perform tasks such as catching fish, picking berries, runninng away from predators and building shelters. We were not evolved to sit almost stationary in front of a computer screen all day, but unfortunatley the reality is that is what many of us are forced to do to earn a living.

Yoga helps to prevent pain problems, especially in office workers, by stretching and strengthening many of the bodies different muscle groups. When people sit all day, some muscles can become tight and contracted, while other muscles may become weak and stretched out. Our bodies can literally "freeze" into a position that we stay in for too long. Practicing yoga each day can help to retrain your body so that muscles are elongated as well as strengthened.

3. Try eating a lower glycemic diet. I like the book The New Sugar Busters - a lot. It has good information on how to lower your glycemic levels. I have tried low carb diet programs, but they just didn't work for me. I got very edgy and my skin got dried out. I even developed eczema for the first time in my life on a low carb diet. But with low glycemic you just cut out foods high in sugar. This doesn't mean just cane sugar, but also foods like potatoes and white bread. Recently my son was very ill, and I flet myself getting a sore throat, too, which normally meant I would also get sick. But I tried going on the Sugar Busters diet and didn't end up getting sick. I think lowering my glycemic levels helped, so I'm going to try to stick to this diet more often.

The only thing I don't agree with in the book is the authors' recommendation to eat whole grains. I don't think most grains are really all that good for you. I start to develop trouble sleeping and other health symptoms from consuming whole grains. I think they have to many phytates, which can decrease mineral absorption.
