Tips for a Healthy Diet

Ways to Get More Fruit and Vegetables
into Your Daily Diet

1. Drink fruit juice instead of soda. Or if you enjoy the fizz, add fruit juice to carbonated mineral water for a healthy home made soda.

2. Instead of fried eggs for breakfast, make yourself a veggie omelet. For variety, you can mix and match ingredients. Some vegetables that I like are peppers, onions, mushrooms, artichokes, asparagus, and spinach.

3. Keep cookies and chips out of site, but keep a fruit basket on the table for an attractive centerpiece and a visual reminder to eat more produce.

4. Keep frozen fruit on hand for quick blender smoothies. Keep ingredients like milk, yogurt, honey, protein powder and assorted nut butters to allow you to experiment with different recipes.

5. If you have problems with produce spoiling before you can eat it, then either buy frozen fruits and vegetables, or buy fresh produce with relatively long storage lives such as:

  • Apples
  • Potatoes
  • Cabbage
  • Beets
  • Parsnips
  • Onions
  • Squash
  • Sweet potatoes

6. When you order pizza, you can make it healthier by asking for less cheese and more veggies.

7. Keep dried fruit on hand for sack lunches. I have stacks of fruit leathers and boxes on raisins in our fridge for healthy school lunches.

8. If you are truly motivated, by a dehydrator and make your own dried fruit for snacks. Dried vegetables make a nice addition to fresh salads.

9. Another suggestion for the truly motivated is to buy a juicer, Then you are not limited to the few selections of juices, like apple and orange juice, available at the grocery stores. Juicers can make snack time fun by allowing kids to pick out their own selection of the fruits and veggies they like juiced. I've run taste tests with my kids and basically apple juice plus almost anything else tastes good, as long as you keep the apple juice ratio high enough.

10. When you make pasta, add an assortment of colorful vegetables to the sauce.

11. Make vegetable soup in the crock pot each morning or evening. Keep it simmering on low all day to blend the flavors, and scoop out a big bowlful for a healthy snack whenever you you feel hungry.

12. Once a week have a baked potato night. Make one or two large potatoes for every member of you family and then have healthy choices for them to add for toppings such as chopped chives, onions and tomatoes. If you have trouble sleeping at night, add some beans and nuts to your salad for an extra magnesium boost.

13. Add lots of veggies to your sandwiches. Some popular veggies to add would be sprouts, lettuce, onions, red pepper slices and tomatoes.

14. Have a salad with your dinner every night. Experiment with different kinds of lettuce as a base. If you get gas from eating raw vegetables, try having the salad with a a dressing that contain active helpful bacteria cultures, like those made with yogurt or a Ranch dressing made with cultered buttermilk.
