Anxiety, depression and feelings of constant nervousness seem to be common conditions associated with people with connective tissue disorders and related features of such as:

Doctors often blame connective tissue problems solely on bad genes, genetic defects and/or defective connective tissue. However, this hypothesis does not provide a logical solution as to why anxiety disorders and a generalized anxiety disorder often go hand in hand with CTDs. What would defective connective tissue have to do with a person's sense of tranquility, or lack thereof?

There are a number of nutritional deficiencies that are known to impact the nervous system, especially deficiencies of magnesium. Magnesium is needed not only to build connective tissue and relax muscles, it is also a biochemical needed to turn off the flow of adrenaline. (See my section on magnesium and anxiety disorders for more on this topic.)

One cannot think well, love well, sleep well,
if one has not dined well.
Virgina Woolf

When adrenaline levels in people are high, they tense up and get ready for action. This is a natural and protective event when faced with a life threatening situation, such as being chased by a wild animal or needing to evacuate a burning building. It's not so great, though, to have high levels of adrenaline when you are trying to get to sleep, take a test at school or do routine activities like washing your car. In my case constant high adrenaline levels just lead to insomnia and a generalized feeling of anxiety. When I changed my diet to eat more magnesium rich foods and improve my digestion, my feelings of anxiety, along with a plethora of other seemingly unrelated health conditions including mitral valve prolapse, TMJ, IBS, frozen shoulder, etc. all cleared up in unison.

Magnesium is needed to build connective tissue, relax tight muscles, build strong bones and turn off adrenaline. Magnesium is need to perform hundreds of different functions within the human body. So if you are low in this one important mineral, a deficiency can cause defective connective tissue, weak bones, tight muscles and anxiety and depression, thus providing a logical possible explanation of why anxiety and CTDs often go hand in hand.
